Toyo River
In July, the rainy season ends, the bright sun shines on the earth and Ayutsuri (sweetfish fishing) starts on the Toyogawa River. Sweetfish live in limpid streams and each has a territory of about 1㎡.
Making use of their territoriality, anglers use a sweetfish as a lure, to provoke another sweetfish into dashing itself against the lure to drive it away. Anglers thoroughly enjoy themselves hooking sweetfish while wading in the river. Ayutsuri is one of summer's most poetic attractions in this region.
According to a Ministry of Construction survey, the Toyogawa River is the fourth cleanest river in Japan and many kinds of fish live there, as well as sweetfish. The Toyogawa is loved by the people as the city's 'Mother River.'
The city has various plans to make the Toyogawa's water even cleaner, and is providing facilities such as a park on the riverbank to enable even greater enjoyment of nature.
